Diamonds In The Rough is a special experience - three voices, unsupported by instruments, exploring a range of music from traditional folk to pop. Pamela, Jim and Glenda provide rich tones, compelling harmonies and a range of emotion that includes love, humor, grief and joy.
Their repertoire is an unusual mix: traditional ballads of the British Isles, popular songs from the 30's and 40's, contemporary folk songs and more. In a performance filled with harmony, rhythm and emotion, the trio are often surprising and always a delight. Pamela Goddard has been gathering traditional songs since her high school days. Her major influences have been Jean Redpath, Martin Carthy, The Waterson's and Joni Mitchell. She has spent most of her life in New York's Hudson Valley, but is currently living in Ithaca. She has a B.A. in English Literature and a background as a writer, an editor and an historian. Jim Blake is a native of Binghamton, New York. He joined the choir of the Methodist Church when he was six years old, and has been singing in public ever since. After abandoning liturgical music, his influences include Johnny Hartford, Seatrain and The Bobs. He learned a smattering of music theory at SUNY-Cortland. Glenda Blake is also a native of Binghamton. She taught her brother Jim to harmonize at an early age, and she continues teaching him to this very day. She makes her living as a graphics artist and sings in a variety of settings, including the Binghamton Downtown Singers and the Choir of the Sarah Jane Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church in Johnson City. |
