"It's the typical story: boy meets girl in high school, they play in folk bands, they marry and move to Canada for five years, move back, divorce and form a fresh guitar/accordion duo producing songs that are being sung by amateurs and professionals all over the world. OK, perhaps it's not typical. But then there is very little that is conventional about Lou and Peter Berryman." -- Matt Watroba, Sing Out!
Lou and Peter met in high school in Appleton, Wisconsin, and first started playing in bands together in 1964. After college, they spent five years being married to each other and living in Canada, then moved back tothe States, broke up, and started an amazing song writing and performing duo, which has been going strong since 1977. They recorded the first of their twelve albums in 1980. Lou Berryman is a fabric and fiber artist with a degree in Art History. She plays piano-accordion and button accordion. She is also accomplished on piano, harpsichord, banjo, viola de gamba, saxophone, lute, and guitar. She is the melody writer for their songs, and handles most of the band's business. Peter Berryman was born in Philadelphia, but spent formative years in Appleton. He used to be an illustrator. He plays 12-string guitar and writes the lyrics, as well as handling the duo's mail order, graphics, and checking of the oil. "When it comes to being funny, I think I've spent the first thirty years trying to be as funny as Tom Lehrer and the last part will be trying to be as funny as the Berrymans. They don't come any funnier than that..." -- Tom Paxton Visit them at: http://members.aol.com/berrymanp/ |
